What is the Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club?

The Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club is one of the longest running alpine ski clubs in Canada. We offer alpine ski programs for kids aged 6-18, on beautiful Grouse Mountain, minutes away from Vancouver, BC.

We are a non-profit volunteer-run club. We have about 150 families who participate year-round within a positive, fun and social network that supports our athletes, our coaches, and alpine skiing.

Read more on our About Us page.

Back to Questions

What programs do you have?

Tyee offers alpine ski programs for kids aged 6-18. You can read more about those programs on our Programs Overview page.

Note that we do not offer freestyle skiing, nordic skiing or snowboarding programs at this time.

Back to Questions

How much does membership cost?

Total membership costs include:

 • Tyee Club family membership ($360 for new families in 2019)
 • BC Alpine membership and insurance for each family member
 • Program fees for each athlete
 • Camp and race fees (which are not included in Program fees)

See our Membership Overview and Program Overview pages for more information.

In addition, families need to buy their own ski equipment, clothing and lift passes.

Alpine skiing is not inexpensive. However, we do everything we can to keep costs as reasonable as possible, including running the club with volunteers and active fundraising and sponsorship programs.

Back to Questions

Are parents required to participate?

Definitely. The Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club is not a ski school nor a drop-off babysitting service.

Volunteering is one of the cornerstones of the club. The coaching staff and one part-time administrator are paid; all the other work to run the club is done by parent volunteers.

Each season, parents are required to work a total of 8 volunteer days which can include shifts in the Tyee kitchen, settting up and breaking down training courses, helping with on-snow safety and assisting at the many races we host at Grouse Mountain.

A a member family you are also expected to contribute one item to the club's Silent Auction which is an important annual club fundraiser.

There are lots of other ways to be involved as well. See our Volunteer page for more information.

Back to Questions

We don't have time to volunteer. Can we just pay extra?

No. Tyee is a community club: run by members, for members and their kids. Everyone is expected to participate and volunteer.

Back to Questions

How big is the club?

The club consists of about 150 families. We have over 550 members, of whom about 240 are athletes.

Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club has been the biggest alpine ski club in BC for the last 5 years. You can find more information on the size of the various clubs in BC on the BC Alpine website.

Back to Questions

What equipment do we need?

Family members need their own equipment:

 • skis, poles, boots and helmets
 • good quality ski clothing to stay warm, dry and comfortable

You can find some basic guidelines about gear on our Equipment page.

You can also find used equipment on the club's Buy & Sell page, at our Fall Equipment Swap, at the Whistler Turkey Sale, etc.

Back to Questions

Do we have to buy our own lift tickets?

Yes, families have to buy their lift tickets. Grouse Mountain, our platinum sponsor, offers its discounted Y2Play rate to new members in the fall.

Back to Questions

What skiing ability and experience should our child(ren) have?

If your child is 6-10 she must at a minimum be able to turn and stop on command, and be comfortable loading and sitting on the chairlift

If your child is over 10 she must be very athletic and have done a lot of skiing. We have on-snow tryouts in the spring for kids over 10 who want to join our programs.

Back to Questions

What is the best age for kids to start in the club?

The earlier to start ski racing the better. It is best to start at under 10 years old. If your child is over 10 she must be very athletic and have done a lot of skiing. We have on-snow tryouts for kids over 10 who want to join our programs.

Back to Questions

What if our children are already involved in other sports?

We suggest staying involved in as many sports possible and as long as possible. The club encourages cross-training with other sports and it won't be a problem to miss a skiing session because the athlete participates in another type of sport instead.

Back to Questions

What are the training hours and days?

On-snow training is Sat / Sun 7:30-2:30, and Tues / Thurs 5:30-8:30.

U10s and MStars train one or both weekend days, and one weekday evening.

U12s train one or both weekend days and both weekday evenings.

U14/U16s generally train both weekend days and both weekday evenings.

Please see our Programs pages for more information.

Back to Questions

Do the parents have to be good skiers?

Parents do not have to be good skiers. However, signing up for the club is a great opportunity to improve your own skiing by either taking lessons while your child is training, or by skiing along with your child's group (if the coach gives you the okay).

Some parents in the club do not ski at all, and there are many ways for them to be involved.

Back to Questions

Are there activities outside the ski season?

Absolutely. We have spring, summer and fall dryland (fitness programs), as well as social events throughout the year. Please see the 'Tyee Year' summary on our Membership page to get an idea.

Back to Questions

How do we sign up for the club?

Tyee membership is by invitation only. If you are interested in applying, please fill out the online wait list form when it is posted to our website (usually in late March for the following season).

When you fill out the form please give us as much information as possible. Be sure to mention if you have friends or references in the club.

Read about our membership schedule on the Registration page. Many of our programs are full by early summer. Note that we require on-snow tryouts for our older racing programs (U12-U16), and these are held in April or May.

Back to Questions

When should we apply?

Fill out the online wait list form as soon as possible once it is posted to our website (usually in late March for the following season). You can read more about our membership schedule on the Registration page.

Back to Questions

Why didn't we get in when we applied last year?

Every year we have more families apply for the Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club than we can accommodate. We do not like to turn people away, but the size of our club is limited by:

 • availability of coaches
 • hillspace on the mountain
 • Tyee cabin capacity

In addition, we work hard to structure the club so that we have the right combination of age groups to ensure effective coaching and the long term health of our racing program.

Back to Questions

About Grouse Mountain

Is there a special rate on Grouse Passes for Tyee members?

Grouse Mountain very generously extends its Y2Play rates to new members in the fall (normally those rates are available only in the spring for the following season).

Back to Questions

How and when do we buy our passes?

Returning members should renew their Y2Play passes during Grouse Mountain's regular pass sale in the spring.

New members can go to Grouse Mountain Guest Services in the fall to get their Y2Play passes. Grouse will have a full Tyee membership list. Just tell them you are with Tyee to get the discount.

You will receive an email from our Membership Chair telling you when you can get the passes. Please go only on those dates, as Guests Services gets very busy at other times.

If you have more than one surname in your family, note that Grouse's list is sorted by the family name used to register with Tyee.

Also note that only full Tyee members are eligible for the discounted passes.

Back to Questions

Is there a reserved parking area at the mountain for Tyee members?

No. Grouse Mountain kindly requests that Tyee members use the lower parking lot. We are such a large group that we can fill most of the upper lot before the general public even has a chance to load the tram!

Please also slow down, watch for pededstians, respect the 10 minute limits and the loading zones, and do not park in bus parking.

We are so lucky to have the support of Grouse Mountain. We would like to keep it that way!

Back to Questions

How can I check the weather on Grouse?

Snow Phone: 604.986.6262

Back to Questions

I have volunteered to help on the mountain (kitchen, race, etc.) but I don’t have a pass. Do I have to buy a ticket?

If you have volunteered for a race then the race organizers will give you a ticket at the bottom.

If you are helping in the kitchen, cabin, etc. then go to Guest Services and tell them you are with Tyee and that you need a pass. Note that your name will be listed under the family name registered with Tyee (in case you have a different surname).

About the Website, Registration and Online Payments

I forgot my login. What should I do?

Your login is the family email address you registered with your membership. If you don't know what that is, email

Back to Questions

How do I reset my login/ password?

If you know your login and password, you can change them by logging in to the website and selecting 'Edit Details' at the top right of any page. From there you can change your email address (which is also your login) and your password.

Please note that if your email address has changed you should also notify Unfortunately the club lists don't get updated automatically when you edit your address on the website.

If you know your login but not your password, click on 'Login' and then 'Reset Password' and a new password will be sent to your email address.

Back to Questions

I reset my password. Why didn’t I get an email with the new one?

An email with a new password is sent immediately to your login email address.

Please check your 'Spam' or 'Junk' folder. The email will be from '' Website or '' or something like that.

If you are still having difficulty email

Back to Questions

How do I register for an event?

Log in to the website.

Click on the event in the 'Upcoming Events' section on the right sidebar (you may have to scroll down).

If you do not see the event in the list but you received a registration link in an email, click on that instead.

Click on the 'Signup Here' link in the table at the top of the event description.

If you are still having difficulty email

Note that only insured club members can register for events.

Back to Questions

When will the club have an iPhone / Android app?

When someone in the club volunteers to write and maintain one!

Back to Questions

How can I tell what I have registered and paid for?

Please keep your receipts as a record of your registrations.

If registration is still open for an event and you are not sure whether you registered or not, just go back into the registration and it will show you. The system will not allow you to register twice.

You can see all past registrations in your Tyee account.

Back to Questions

I missed a registration deadline. What should I do?

In general we cannot accept late registrations: they cause so much extra work. Please keep in mind that Tyee is volunteer-run community club, not a business.

Occasionally a late registration can be accommodated, IF the arrangements have not been made yet for a trip or race. There will be a $50 late fee for events $200+, or a $25 late fee for events under $200. Email

Back to Questions

I made a mistake on a registration. What should I do?

Email and right away, before making any payment if possible.

Back to Questions

I registered for a race or social event, but now something else has come up. Can I get a refund?

Refunds are generally not available (except for medical reasons in some cases). You accept the club's payment terms and conditions explicitly every time you make a payment. Please make sure you are familiar with them (see our Terms and Conditions page).

Back to Questions

Why is the club so strict about registration deadlines and refunds?

When you ask for an exception to a registration deadline, or to the club's refund policy, it might not seem like much.

Keep in mind, though, that Tyee has over 230 racers and 300 other family members, and about 50 registered events per year.

Only the coaching staff and one part-time administrator are paid: parent volunteers do all the rest of the work to run the club.

In order to keep both the volunteer workload and the club's fees as reasonable as possible, we ask that you plan ahead, register by the deadlines, and do not ask for exceptions. They take so much time. Please and thank you in advance!

Back to Questions

What payment methods does the club accept?

We accept online credit card payments only: Visa Credit, Visa Debit, and MasterCard Credit. We do not accept any other cards nor cash, cheques, etc. Please see our Terms and Conditions page for more info.

Back to Questions

When will my charges be processed?

Credit card charges will go through on the same or next business day.

Back to Questions

Can I sign up for an event and pay later?

The system will allow this to a point. However, even if you haven't paid, if the member is shown as "signed up" they are registered and the fee will be charged to your account. Any amount owing stays in your account and will be payable next time you log in and checkout. You can "un-register" a member by returning to the registration page and clicking on the Undo button in the appropriate box - this can be done on any unpaid registration at any time up to the registration deadline. Not paying for the event will NOT automatically cancel the registration.

Back to Questions

Can I pay by cheque instead?

Sorry, we do not accept cheques.

Back to Questions

Is the online payment system secure?

Tyee uses the Moneris online eSELECT Plus Hosted PayPage system to accept and process all your online payments.

Moneris is highly secure and reliable. It processes more than 3 billion credit and debit card transactions a year, for over 350,000 merchant locations across North America.

Of course you should use the same care and attention when making a payment through Moneris as you would when making any other online payment:

 • keep your credit card information private
 • if you are using a wireless network, make sure it is secure
 • do not use your browser's back button during a payment
 • keep your receipts and check your credit card statements

Back to Questions

Why do I get a security warning on my computer when I make a payment?

Depending on your browser and its security settings, you may see a warning like the one below when you make an online payment.

Select 'Continue' or 'Confirm' if you see a message like this.

Rest assured that your credit card information is safe. The warning message is telling you that a secure webpage (Moneris) is about to send information to an unsecured webpage (Tyee). The information in question is the content of your payment confirmation/ receipt. It does NOT include your credit card credentials.

Your payment has already gone through. If you select 'Cancel' then your balance owing will not be updated on the Tyee side. You will not see the confirmation webpage and you will not get an email receipt. If you do select 'Cancel' by mistake, do not attempt to make another payment. Contact

Back to Questions

I made a payment but never got the confirmation page on the website or an email receipt. What should I do?

This can happen if you select 'Cancel' when presented with a security warning, or use the back button during a payment, or there is a network problem during the transaction.

Be patient waiting for the confirmation: the system gets very busy sometimes. If it does not appear after a few minutes though, email

Please do not attempt to make another payment.

Back to Questions

I think I made a double payment. What should I do?

Note that any double payments are caught automatically at month-end anyway.

Back to Questions

Why is my email receipt hard to read?

If you have your email set up to display Text only (instead of HTML), then your receipt will show up with HTML source. For example, you may see lines like this:

[div id="receipt"]

[em]Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club Receipt of Payment[/em]

We know about this problem, and it is on our list of things to fix. If you can help in any way, please email

Back to Questions

Will the club send tax receipts at the end of the year?

Sorry, we do not send tax receipts. Please keep your receipts when you make your payments.

Back to Questions

About Club Email

What email lists will we be on?

When you register for Tyee you provide one family email address and optionally one email address per member.

The family address is added to our general mailing list. We send information about the club and upcoming club events to that list.

To add your email to program list please log into your account and update the Email List as per instructions at the end of this page.

Back to Questions

Does Tyee sell or share its email lists?

No, we do not sell or share our lists.

Back to Questions

My email address changed. What should I do?

Log in to the website, click on 'Edit Details', and update your email address.

Also remove your old address and add your new one to/from the appropriate lists using the instructions at the end of this page.

Back to Questions

How do I add or remove an email address from the lists?

When you log into the website, you will see a link in the blue bar at the top of your screen: Email Lists. If you follow that link, you will be presented with a screen containing a grid: email addresses down the side, email lists across the top. Here you can manage which emails are on which lists, and you can add, change and delete email addresses associated with your account.
