Record Turnout For The Sun Peaks Camp

The Christmas ski camps on Grouse are seen as the kick off to the Tyee season.  For the older age groups though, starting at U12, early season camps abroad are a great way to get back on snow, work on skills and reconnect with the Tyee family.   Coach Tamara and her team had the U12s at Sun Peaks for our largest early season camp yet.  Tamara was really impressed,

“The turn out for this years U12 fall camp at Sun Peaks was a record high:  16 athletes participated 4 days and 7 athletes came out for the weekend to ski under blue bird skies and on fantastically groomed, grippy and cold snow.”

The Sun Peaks Camp is also a tremendous opportunity for the first year athletes to get to know the second year kids.

“Groups were mixed up with first and second year athletes skiing with each other. One of the goals of the day was to get to know every teammate and report back to the coaches about one thing they learned from each teammate they did not know before.”  Said Tamara.  “We coaches also learned lots of things we didn't know before - we have a very interesting bunch of kids for sure!”

It wasn’t all Kumbaya stuff though.   Tamara and the U12 coaches have an endlessly deep toolbox when it comes to training techniques.

“The technical focus was on ankle movement and some angulation. We saw some great improvements in skiing, kids were greatly engaged and mileage was spectacular. This was definitely one of the best camps we have had in the last couple of years.”

Check out the sprongo videos on our website to see what the kids are working on.
